Sacha Baron Cohen as a slave owner in Tarantino’s ‘Django’? Posted: 14 Nov 2011 04:24 AM PST Quentin Tarantino is quite keen, Variety says, to have Sacha Baron Cohen play a gambler whop buys the title character’s wife (Kerry Washington) as a slave in the director’s Civil War era “Southern Western,” “Django Unchained.” Sounds a bit like Stunt casting, nothing we haven’t seen from QT before. But thinking of Cohen’s work in say “Sweeney Todd” or even “Talladega Nights,” it feels like a slam dunk. |
Legos in ‘a major motion picture’ from Warner Brothers Posted: 14 Nov 2011 03:59 AM PST Toy-based movie projects are all the rage in a business that has learned that brand identity is more important to audiences than the idea of “How could they make a movie out of “Battleship,” “Ouija Boards,” “Stetch Armstrong” etc.?” Warner Brothers has the fellows behind “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatlballs” on board its planned Lego movie. Phil Lord and Christ Miller are their names (Phil’s from south Florida). It will be a mixture of animation and live action, and the WB-contracted folks behind “Happy Feet” will handle the animating. Variety reports that this is a 2014 release. So now yet ANOTHER Florida theme park will have movie based attractions and tie-ins as of 2014. Lego film parodies and video movies have been around forever, but this is a purpose-built film with a plot, real actors and the works. So if you stop your eye-rolling, I promise to as well. |
‘Immortals’ cools off a bit, ‘Jack-Jill’ and ‘Puss’ slug it out for second Posted: 13 Nov 2011 05:48 AM PST “Immortals” turns out to have done a HUGE chunk of its business on Friday. By Saturday, “the Twitter effect” had kicked in, and all those folks who ignored the weak reviews were telling their friends “Meh.” “Immortals” looks like a $32 million or so opener — good, not epic — with “Jack and Jill” maybe reaching $27.5, “Puss in Boots,” “the best animated film of the year,” is doing better than any other animated feature in terms of holding audience, and clearing $27 million this weekend. It will be sitting at about $110 million by Monday AM. Henry Cavill doesn’t look like quite the Sam Worthington-size brand name for box office. Yet. but this isn’t bad news for “Man of Steel.” “J. Edgar” cooled off a bit, opening at about $12 million after Friday suggested it might come closer to $14. It’s not on a boatload of screens like the others, so that’s not bad. “Will it still be doing business Thanksgiving?” is the bigger question with a prestige picture. Weak reviews suggest the “prestige” won’t hold. “Harold & Kumar” went straight down the Christmas toilet — 64% drop off. |
