Today’s interviews, Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek Posted: 16 Oct 2011 04:26 AM PDT They do the two lead voices in the “Shrek” spin-off, “Puss in Boots,” which reaches theaters Oct. 28. Robert Rodriguez was the guy who first thought to team them up, way back in “Desperado.” Salma Hayek’s only just discovered how purrrrfect her voice is for ‘toons. She’s also in this “Pirates” movie the Aardman/”Wallace and Gromit” folks have coming up. Antonio Banderas is by now an old hand at cartoons, and it shows in “Puss in Boots” (HIL-arious) already has the new Almodovar film, “The Skin I Live In,” in theaters (not the best reviews for that one). Any lines of questioning that come to mind, things you want to know about their work? Post them in the comments below. |
Movie Preview: ‘This Means War’ Posted: 15 Oct 2011 08:34 AM PDT OK, hands down the funniest trailer I’ve seen in months. MONTHS. |
‘Top Gun,’ the sequel — Hollywood learns nothing from this weekend’s remake-a-rama Posted: 15 Oct 2011 05:44 AM PDT OK, the message being sent by “Footloose” is that audiences don’t want favorite movies, movies that generations have seen on cable, remade. Good reviews, improving on the original film? Not a help. I get the distinct impression that people have a remakes aversion that is driving their decision making. Thus, revisiting another beloved bad ’80s picture, “Top Gun,” seems like a stupid idea. Stupid. Call it a “sequel,” let Jerry Bruckheimer go back to the scene of his first huge success and all that. Maybe even turn Tom Cruise into an instructor this time. Still a stupid idea. The original Reagan-Era sabre rattler was as dated as “Battleship” movies. We still have the hottest fighter jocks on the planet, but nobody wants to dogfight us, and hasn’t in generations. Every week’s news has a story about the military getting out of the figher and fighter-bomber pilot business and into drones. |
Poor timing — Leo DiCaprio’s ‘Gatsby’ and ‘Django Unchained’ to open the same day Posted: 15 Oct 2011 05:28 AM PDT You have to figure one of these two big deal movies will blink and move off their planned Christmas Day, 2012 release date. Will it be the Baz Luhrmann all-star “Great Gatsby” remake, or Quentin Tarantino’s slave’s revenge Southern/Western, “Django Unchained?” Both have Leonardo DiCaprio in leading roles, though it would be hard to think there’ll a huge overlap in terms of audience. “Gatsby” is a literary classic, a subtle, serious period piece full of romance and American experience metaphor. Tarantino’s a film buff’s filmmaker with a yen for violence. |
