Might Eddie Murphy host the Oscars? Posted: 06 Sep 2011 04:01 AM PDT Brett Ratner is running the show at this year’s Oscars. He’s co-producing it, actually. But his name raised eyebrows, which isn’t a bad thing for staid, stodgy Hollywood. That gig wouldn’t mean much, ordinarily, as the show is so formatted that putting your imprint on it is getting nigh on impossible. But he will have a say in who gets to host. Jackie Chan, as a nod to China? Owen Wilson? Chris Tucker? People he’s worked with. Steve Pond is floating this trial balloon — Eddie Murphy. That’s an intriguing notion. A little fence-mending, showing there’s no hard feelings after he acted all miffed that he didn’t win the big prize for “Dream Girls.” He’d be funny. Flip. Considering the folks who have not overwhelmed us in recent years, (and you know Hugh Jackman is their default choice, being a triple threat and all, though he wasn’t my favorite), Murphy would be daring enough to make people tune it. What WILL he say? With “The Help” as an early Oscar favorite, this could be a year for putting the most successful black actor ever to put his stamp on a telecast. |
Tuesday’s Interview: Ryan Gosling Posted: 05 Sep 2011 03:30 PM PDT I have this interview scheduled with “Drive” star Ryan Gosling on Tuesday. It is fraught with peril. Knowing the space constraints, I have to keep the focus fairly narrow. But that narrow spot may be a blind alley. “Drive” is about a mechanic and part time stunt car driver who moonlights as a “wheelman,” a getaway car driver. It opens Sept. 16. |
Movie Preview: ‘Terri,’ opening Friday at the Enzian Posted: 05 Sep 2011 12:42 PM PDT Here’s an indie dramedy co-starring John C. Reilly and hitting the Enzian Friday. “Terri” was at this year’s Florida Film Festival, a film about a disaffected/apathetic overweight kid, the detention he’s sent to (Reilly is the assistant principal in charge) and the kids he sort of befriends there. A little off, I thought. But anything Reilly finds worth his time is always going to be a little of our time. Here’s the trailer to “Terri.” |
